Volunteer Service at Beebe

Opportunities abound at Beebe Medical Center for those who wish to get involved with volunteerism. We currently have over 250 active volunteers, including Volunteer Services and the Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary. Our volunteers help in areas of patient care and non-patient care such as clerical assistance, mail delivery, deli, and fund-raising through the Auxiliary. Our volunteers work in patient care areas such as Same Day Surgery and the Emergency Department, where they are liaisons between the patient's family and staff. Volunteers usually work one four-hour shift a week.

Through the Delaware Volunteerism Act, students in grades 9 through 12 at public and private schools earn one elective high school credit toward graduation for completing 90 hours of community service. Beebe Medical Center participates in this program and offers students opportunities to volunteer.

Beebe volunteers contributed more than 54,000 hours in 2008, performing various roles at the hospital in Lewes and at satellite centers throughout the county. When volunteers explain their roles, they stress that the greatest rewards go to themselves. Sue Mast, a volunteer since 2002, says, "Thank you for putting me in my volunteer position in Same Day Surgery. In my position as liaison between the Beebe staff and the patient's family, I receive as much as I give." Tony Barbieri, a volunteer since 2007 in the Mended Hearts program, says, "I go with the patient for pre-op testing prior to surgery, and I visit with the patient afterwards. It helps me more than it helps the patient."

Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary

You are invited to become a member of the Beebe Auxiliary, a volunteer group in service to Beebe Medical Center. There are currently more than 175 men and women who make up the membership of the Auxiliary. While the nature of the activities supported by the Auxiliary has changed significantly over the years, the focus and purpose has always remained constant – helping the Medical Center to better serve the needs of our communities and its residents.

Our Mission
The Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary was founded in 1936 with the sole purpose to promote and advance the welfare of Beebe Medical Center and its patients. This purpose is accomplished through providing support to the medical center in achieving its mission and through volunteer supported fundraising activities.

Annual donations from the Auxiliary are given to the medical center to support various projects and programs that benefit residents and visitors to this community.

The Auxiliary also annually awards academic scholarships to nursing students.

Since its founding in 1936, only 20 years after the founding of Beebe Medical Center, the Beebe Auxiliary has contributed more than $1.75 million to the medical center. Last year's efforts resulted in a $275,000 contribution.

Activities and Services
Members of the Beebe Auxiliary participate in a number of activities and events, all of which help make friends and raise funds for the medical center:

  • Treasure Chest Thrift Shop
  • Medical Center Gift Shop
  • Arts and Craft Group
  • Silk Flower Group

  • Community Fairs
  • Dinner Events
  • Public Relations Events

Members of the Auxiliary also have the opportunity to serve in positions offered by the Volunteer Services Department.

Auxiliary Membership

  • Membership is open to both men and women.
  • General membership meetings are held at the medical center's main campus the first Friday of October, November, February, and March.
  • The annual membership meeting is held in May at a local restaurant.
  • There are two membership levels:
    • Active members may volunteer in a way that meets their personal abilities and time restraints.
    • Inactive members support the Auxiliary as ambassadors of goodwill.
  • Annual dues: $10 for both active and inactive members.

We hope you will want to help Beebe Medical Center by becoming a member of the Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary. New members are always welcome. Beebe's Treasure Chest Thrift Shop

Beebe's Treasure Chest Thrift Shop is located in the Midway Shopping Mall along Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach offers shoppers great buys and gently used items. An army of volunteers help at the shop, sorting, hanging up and putting away items, and waiting on customers.

Thrift Shop
The shop, opened in February 2007, has been a fundraising success for Beebe Medical Center, aiding the Beebe Auxiliary in its tireless effort to support the medical center and the healthcare that it brings to the community.

The little shop that was squeezed into a store front at the back of the shopping center has spilled into the space next door, expanding the area for more furniture, house wares, and clothing items. Children's clothing, dungarees and sweatshirts, pajamas and jackets, fill large plastic tubs. Shelves are stacked with glassware, pitchers, and candle holders. A chandelier hugs a corner as nearby lamps wait for new homes.

There are children's books and adult books in one corner, and costume jewelry in a glass display case in the center of a room. A clothing rack holds gently worn women's evening wear. Racks separate men's and women's clothing, which are carefully sized to make eye-catchers easier to find.

Beebe's Treasure Chest Thrift Shop is operated by the Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary, Inc., and staffed by volunteers. Individuals and businesses throughout the community have contributed all of the items that are available for sale.

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To make arrangements
for the pick up of large items please call the Shop Manager at
