Since 1998, Beebe Medical Center has provided outpatient Diabetes Education for the community. Education is provided by certified diabetes educators (CDE's) and registered dietitians. Diabetes is a rapidly growing chronic disease that affects approximately 70,000 Delawareans. Two out of every thousand school children have diabetes. About 300 infants each year are born to mothers with diabetes during pregnancy. There are many individuals walking around who do not know they have diabetes. Unfortunately, by the time diabetes is diagnosed, there may already be complications.
Whether you are an adult with type 1, type 2, or pregnancy-related diabetes, we offer programs that can give you the tools to help you make good decisions, answer your questions, and help you better understand and manage your diabetes. We strive to provide you with state-of-the-art diabetes education, skills, and support you will need to live a full, rich, and productive life. Services offered include:
Diabetes education services
- Inpatient diabetes education consultations
- Outpatient individual and group sessions
Diabetes self-management education
An 8-hour education series with the following topics:
- "New Beginnings"
- "Foods for You"
- "Feeling Good for Life"
- "Control Your Destiny"
These two-hour or four-hour educational programs are provided during the week and sometimes on Saturdays.
Follow-up education is scheduled three to six months after the first educational program series to make sure you are doing well and meeting your individual goals.
Available specialty education
- Gestational education
- Carbohydrate counting
- Basic and advanced nutrition
- Diabetes prevention education

Individual sessions are available for patients who are unable to participate in group presentations.
Most insurance companies recommend annual follow-up education after your initial series. These updates keep you abreast of current topics in the management of your diabetes.
