Diabetes Management
Since 1998, Beebe Medical Center has provided outpatient Diabetes Education for the community. Education is provided by certified diabetes educators (CDE's) and registered dietitians. Diabetes is a rapidly growing chronic disease that affects approximately 70,000 Delawareans. Two out of every thousand school children have diabetes. About 300 infants each year are born to mothers with diabetes during pregnancy. There are many individuals walking around who do not know they have diabetes. Unfortunately, by the time diabetes is diagnosed, there may already be complications.
Whether you are an adult with type 1, type 2, or pregnancy-related diabetes, we offer programs that can give you the tools to help you make good decisions, answer your questions, and help you better understand and manage your diabetes. We strive to provide you with state-of-the-art diabetes education, skills, and support you need to live a full, rich, and productive life. Services offered include:
Diabetes education services
- Inpatient diabetes education consultations
- Outpatient individual and group sessions
Diabetes self-management education programs
An 8-hour class series with the following topics:

- "Foods for You"
- "Feeling Good for Life"
- "Control Your Destiny"
These classes are provided in a variety of formats, either 2-hour classes
or 4-hour classes, during the week and some Saturdays.
A follow-up class is scheduled 3 to 6 months after the class series to make sure you are doing well and meeting your individual class goals.
Available specialty classes are as follows:
- Gestational class
- Carbohydrate counting
- Basic and advanced nutrition
- Diabetes prevention class
- Glucose monitoring
Individual sessions are available for patients who are unable to participate in group classes.
Most insurance companies recommend annual follow-up education after your initial series. These updates keep you abreast of current topics in the management of your diabetes.
