Tunnell Cancer Center Honored for Outreach Program to Fight Breast Cancer

"Judith Ramirez, EdD, Manager of Psychosocial Services and Outreach at Tunnell Cancer Center, and Cherrie Rich, RN, Executive Director of Oncology Services at Beebe Medical Center, were among the selected guests invited by Delaware's First Lady Carla Markell to the Governor's Mansion in Dover to celebrate the $322,668 in grants awarded to four Delaware organizations by the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The grants were awarded to fund breast cancer education, awareness, screening, treatment and support projects targeting low-income, uninsured women. Beebe Medical Center's Tunnell Cancer Center was awarded a grant of $99,986 to fund a new breast cancer outreach program that will serve communities throughout Sussex County.

Tunnell Cancer Center's new program, Sharing Our Stories, Saving Our Sisters (SOS2), is focusing on providing free breast cancer screening and education to women in minority and under-served populations in Sussex County who might otherwise not receive the healthcare that they need. The incidence of breast cancer for all women increases with age and is highest among white women; however, mortality rates are highest among African American and Latina women. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the nation besides skin cancer. It also is the second leading cause of cancer death in women.

Tunnell Cancer Center is working with Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, La Esperanza, La Red, First State Action Agency, Camp Rehoboth, Screening for Life, and Nanticoke Memorial Hospital to recruit breast cancer survivors and train them as lay cancer screening navigators' to reach out into their own communities to provide breast health education, encourage women to have mammograms and to learn about early diagnosis and treatment options for breast cancer.
