Beebe Medical Center Team Leader Earns "You Make a Difference" Award

11/27/09

Beebe Medical Center has honored Pam Coleman, Patient Access Department Admitting Team Leader in the Emergency Department, with the You Make a Difference Award for December.

Coleman was nominated by her peers for her skills as a fair and strong team leader, as well as for improving communication between team members in a fun and effective way. When she joined Beebe Medical Center as a Registrar, she had no health care experience. Since joining the Patient Access team, she has taken advantage of many educational opportunities and subsequently promoted to Team Leader.

She earned the Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) credential, and now serves as a technical resource for the Emergency Department Admitting functions in the Patient Access Department. She is known as a true team member, being flexible so that she is available to work when needed.

Team members cited Coleman's natural ability to bring staff members together to work as a team, even during the busy and stressful times in the Emergency Department. She is fair and consistent with staff, and is the first to schedule herself into a production role, or to jump in and provide an extra pair of hands to get things done right the first time.

She has been a leader in Performance Improvement initiatives within the department. She monitors staff productivity and adjusts assignments as needed, an important undertaking considering that the Patient Access staff is on duty continuously.

Communication is one of her strong points. She spends extra time coaching her team and teaching them registration techniques. She also has created a monthly newsletter located on the hospital's Intranet, which is fun and includes mostly team members' contributions. The monthly newsletter also has proven to be a resource for all departments.

Beebe Medical Center's You Make a Difference employee recognition program, which was established in 2002, gives employees the opportunity to recognize their colleagues for outstanding service. The program is similar to an employee of the month program, but 18 employees can be selected annually. Each nomination, which may be submitted by fellow employees or management, must meet criteria developed by the committee. The You Make a Difference Review Board evaluates eligible nominations each month. Winners are announced in a surprise ceremony in which the committee meets in their department and presents the award. Employees selected for the award receive:

§ Parking space with sign/plaque for a month
§ $100 gift certificate to business of choice within Sussex County
§ Letter of congratulations and personal visit from Jeffrey Fried, Beebe president
§ Photo for wall plaque on hall outside of cafeteria
§ Special pin for badge
§ Letter to team member's director and department recognition
