"This year, Steven D. Berlin, MD, and his wife Leisa Berlin, are serving as the Honorary Chairpersons of the 22nd Annual Beebe Ball, A Royal Evening. The event, held for the first time at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center, is raising money for the Beebe Medical Center Women's Health Pavilion, which will be remodeled in 2010.
Dr. Berlin and Mrs. Berlin both have been strong supporters of Beebe Medical Center, each working continuously to improve the health care that it offers our community. Dr. Berlin, an obstetrician/gynecologist, today serves as Beebe's Chief of Obstetrics/Gynecology, overseeing the Women's Health Pavilion, and the Director of Integrative Health. He is the Chair of Beebe Physician Network Board of Trustees, the Chair of the Investigational Review Board, and serves on the Medical Executive Committee. Dr. Berlin also is a member of the Beebe Medical Center Board of Trustees. He is a partner in Bayside Health Association Chtd. in Lewes.
Dr. Berlin, who joined the Beebe Medical Staff in 1994, is a pioneer in gynecologic surgery and alternative medicines. Together with Beebe fellowship-trained surgical oncologist James E. Spellman, MD, Dr. Berlin performs an abdominal chemotherapy known as intraperitoneal treatment (IP) to treat ovarian cancer. Dr. Berlin, together with obstetrician/gynecologists Vincent B. Killeen, MD, and Leo H. Eschbach, DO, has brought laparoscopic hysterectomy to Beebe Medical Center. This procedure and others are offering women an alternative to the tradition approaches and are expanding the minimally invasive surgery program at Beebe Medical Center.
He initiated the Integrative Health Department, which offers complimentary and alternative treatments to the community. He has received additional, specialized training in ob/gyn ultrasound as required to obtain and maintain Bayside Health's ultrasound accreditation by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. He recently has become trained in auricular acupuncture, bringing another alternative modality to our community. Dr. Berlin was recently named a Top Doc by Delaware Today magazine.
Mrs. Berlin has been a well known member of the Lewes business community. She is a former owner of the Blue Water House and the Second Street Candy Store, and most recently has helped her son Chris McKeown with his popular restaurant Agave. Mrs. Berlin always has had time to support Beebe Medical Center, actively working to raise funds. Since 1994 she has been involved with the planning of the Beebe Ball, which is the Medical Center's largest fundraising event of the year. She has been a key person on the table decoration committee, and has used her energy and creativity to make unique decorations every year. In 2006 she was named the Volunteer or the Year.
In addition to Chris, Leisa and Steve's other children are Sarah, who just passed the New Jersey and Pennsylvania bars; Laura, a pastry chef in San Francisco; and Beth, who works at the candy store in Lewes.
The Beebe Ball is organized each year under the auspices of the Beebe Medical Foundation, established in 1989 with the sole mission to raise philanthropic support for Beebe Medical Center. The Foundation is located at 902 Savannah Road, Lewes DE 19958. Please visit us online at www.beebemedicalfoundation.org.
