The Jean & Joan Fund to Honor Tunnell Cancer Center Medical Director Dr. Peri

09/22/09

The Jean & Joan Fund will honor Srihari Peri, MD, the Medical Director of the Tunnell Cancer Center, 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 6, at the dinner following the 10th Annual Jean & Joan Fund Tournament. The event will take place at the Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach and is open to the public.

Dr. Peri has made a significant difference in the lives of so many people, says James Martin, President of the Jean & Joan Fund. He is a compassionate and caring person who is completely dedicated to the well-being of his patients. We want him to know how important he has been to our community as we combat the effects of cancer together.

Dr. Peri, a Board Certified hematologist and medical oncologist, has served as Medical Director of the Tunnell Cancer Center since 1995. He joined Beebe Medical Center in 1991. He is known at Beebe Medical Center as a compassionate physician devoted to helping his patients.

Under his medical leadership, Tunnell Cancer Center has grown to become a center that provides multidisciplinary and comprehensive cancer care and treatment. The Center has grown from a staff of five team members to more than 50 team members. In June 2009, Tunnell Cancer Center was named a recipient of the 2008 Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence. Tunnell Cancer Center is one of only 95 cancer programs across the nation, and the only one in Delaware, to earn this prestigious award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Dr. Peri, focused on the quality of care of his patients, had encouraged Beebe Medical Center in its clinical affiliation with the Delaware/Christiana Care Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) that affords patients of the Tunnell Cancer Center to take part in clinical research trials. Last year, 14 percent of Tunnell Cancer Center patients participated in clinical trials, well above the national average of 3 percent.

Dr. Peri earned his medical degree at Hahawarlal Nehru Medical College, Karnatak University, India, and did his residency in internal medicine at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he was a Bone Marrow Transplant Fellow. He is Board certified in medical oncology, hemotology and internal medicine.

The Jean & Joan Fund was established in the memory of Jean James and Joan Martin, two outstanding women who lost their battles against cancer. It has become the official charity of the King's Creek Country Club, demonstrating its continuing support of local charitable activities. The mission of the fund is to assist patients and families at the Tunnell Cancer Center. Over the past 10 years, total contributions made to Tunnell Cancer Center have topped $250,000.
