Sussex County Cancer Survivors Fund Donates $10,000 to Tunnell Cancer Center

09/22/09

The Sussex County Cancer Survivors Fund has donated $10,000 to Beebe Medical Center's Tunnell Cancer Center for its Patient Special Needs Fund.

We established this organization one year ago because we wanted the money that we raised for cancer to stay in Sussex County and help people here who need help, said Neal Kubala, one of the organizers.

Mr. Kubala presented the check to Cherrie Rich, Executive Director of Oncology Services for Beebe Medical Center, and to Thomas Steiner, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Beebe Medical Center. They were among about 30 people attending an event to mark the organization's one-year anniversary.

The Cancer Patient Special Needs Fund assists individual patients with limited financial resources who need help in covering emergent expenses such as prescriptions or co-pays for medications, medical supplies (i.e. wigs, mastectomy prosthesis), nutrition, essential living expenses, and transportation. This past year $25,000 of the fund helped 30 local patients.

The Sussex County Cancer Survivors' Fund was founded in October 2008. It is a non-profit, fund-raising organization with proceeds benefiting the Tunnell Cancer Center's Patient Special Needs Fund. Organizers include: Mr. Kubala and his wife Bevann Kubala, Frank Shade, Kenny and Suzette Hopkins, Betty Streett, Jackie Sopa, Annie Larson and George O'Shea.
