Beebe Kicks off "Breathe with Ease," a Program to Help Children with Asthma

09/11/09

With the goal of helping children with asthma lead healthy lives, the Respiratory Care Department of Beebe Medical Center has designed a free education program that will reach into the school classroom.

Respiratory therapists already have begun to contact local teachers and principals to get their support and approval so that they can visit classrooms and set up educational sessions with parents and school children. Parents also will have to approve of the program.

Asthma is the most common chronic disorder that children suffer, says Angela Lindale, a registered respiratory therapist and Education Coordinator for the Respiratory Care Department. There are about 3,037 children in Sussex County alone who suffer from asthma. It is so important to not only educate them and their parents, but their friends and their schools, as well, about how it can be controlled and how they can live normal lives.

The free program includes educational sessions about medications, triggers and action plans. It will support schools and families in their efforts to be prepared for when a child suffers an episode so that no one panics.

For more information, or to find out how to get the program into your local school, or if you would like to obtain information for home schooling purposes, please contact Angela Lindale at Beebe Medical Center at (302) 645-3100, ext.5764, or email Angela at Alindale@bbmc.org.
