Beebe Represented at the Delaware Super Luncheon for Ovarian Cancer Awareness
09/10/09
Beebe Medical Center representatives attended Delaware's Super Luncheon hosted by the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. The event took place September 2 at the Governor's Mansion in Dover where First Lady Carla Markell participated in the program and shared her thoughts on cancer with the attendees.
Markell was among the first ladies and governors across the nation who took part in the luncheon marking September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
As a cancer survivor, I know that early detection and awareness is critical to beating this terrible disease, Markell said. I am grateful we were able to host this kind of event and discuss proactively, effective ways to battle this disease."
The nationwide event was spearheaded by the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, the leading independent organization that funds research into finding a method of early detection and ultimately a cure for the disease. Since 1998, OCRF has given $33 million to 142 researchers, scientist and doctors in the leading institution and universities across the nation. More than 22,000 women are diagnosed annually and 15,000 lose their lives from the disease, the OCRF reports.
We were honored to be part of this event, said Cherrie Rich, Executive Director of Beebe Medical Center's Tunnell Cancer Center. Our mission is to bring hope and cure to our patients, and to provide quality care and treatment. It is important to align ourselves with organizations throughout the state and the nation that share the latest information to treat this disease.
Mrs. Rich was joined at the event by Donna Streletzky, Vice President of Operations at Beebe Medical Center, and Sylvia Heinze, Nurse Manager at Tunnell Cancer Center.
We felt we needed to open up the discussion about ovarian cancer around the country, explained Sabrina Schulz, National Program Director of the Super Luncheon. Through the support of these First Ladies and Governors --- by participating in these Super Luncheons --- we are hoping to put a greater spotlight on this disease.
