Beebe Medical Center Education Department Creates Unique Teaching Activity

08/13/09

A nurse nasty' sat outside the patient's room with her feet up on the desk and listened to music on her portable media player. Meanwhile, the patient's bed stood unlocked and an open urine specimen sat uncovered nearby.

Beebe Medical Center staff taking part in an educational activity found this scene as they entered the Room of Horrors, a mock scene set up to create a fun way to hone their focus on patient safety. Other horrors' in the room included: expirations on IV fluids and medications, an open chart which could be read by anyone entering the room and a walker missing a stopper -- which could cause the patient to fall.

Participating Beebe team members had five minutes to write down all errors they could find. More than a hundred team members joined the fun and competed for prizes. The event took place both at the main campus on Savannah Road in Lewes and at Beebe Medical Center's Tunnell Cancer Center on Route 24 in Rehoboth Beach.

We had excellent response from our team members, says Betsy Frederick, RN, MSN, CCRN, Director of Critical Care. Not only was this a fun way to keep our skills sharp, but it increased team spirit and let team members get to know each other better.

The event was organized by Beebe Medical Center's Periodic Performance Review team. This team monitors Beebe's success in meeting the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) and develops programs to educate staff about the NPSG. Many of the NPSG were addressed including infection prevention, patient identification, fall prevention, medication safety, and safety risk identification.

The activity proved successful allowing staff members to view the big picture while honing in on the finer details to put patient safety first. The activity also focused on areas of the greatest need.

We are so appreciative so many team members from both clinical and non-clinical departments participated, says Barb Moulinier, Director of Accreditation. We have been given additional suggestions for the next Room of Horrors that includes having the adjacent room set up that would display the delivery of perfect care. Our School of Nursing faculty also would assist staff in any area that needed to be addressed. We are learning that organization and multiple methods together can be used to continuously increase our skills.
