Beebe Medical Foundation Board Honors The Honorable Eugene D. Bookhammer

07/06/09

Beebe Medical Foundation Board of Trustees has recognized The Honorable Eugene D. Bookhammer by bestowing upon him the honor of Chairman Emeritus. Mr. Bookhammer has served as Board Chairman for the last nine years before recently stepping down.

During his tenure, more than $12.5 million was raised for the Vision 2005 Capital Campaign, a record in Beebe Medical Center's 91-year history.

Mr. Bookhammer stands out as a lifetime supporter of Beebe Medical Center, as well as a leader in Delaware. Mr. Bookhammer is a Sussex County native who earned two Purple Hearts during World War II. He attended Lewes High School with his closest friend Dr. James Beebe, Jr., the son of one of the two founders of the hospital. He started a wholesale/retail lumber company and later became a land developer.

In 1959, Mr. Bookhammer joined the Beebe Medical Center Board of Directors (now the Board of Trustees). He has supported the Medical Center through strategic involvement and fundraising efforts ever since. He served as Chairman of the Board for Beebe Medical Center from 1976 to 1981, and continues to serve as a Board member.

In 2007, Beebe Medical Center and Beebe Medical Foundation presented him with the Lifetime Commitment Award for dedication that was exemplary and an inspiration to others. He is the only person to have earned this award, envisioned as something that would recognize a person or a family that had truly given of themselves to Beebe Medical Center.

Mr. Bookhammer has long been a true friend of Beebe Medical Center, says Paul Mylander, newly elected Board Chairman. He has been a member of the Beebe Medical Foundation Board since it was formed in 1989 to support the Beebe Medical Center. He always has been there to make sure that we succeed in all our endeavors.

Mr. Bookhammer became a Delaware leader. He served as a state senator from 1962 to 1968, going on to being elected as Lt. Governor. He served from 1969 to 1977, and was the only Lt. Governor to serve under two governors of different political parties. Between 1969 to 1976 he was a member of the National Republican Committee. He also has been a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Potentate of the Shriners.

There is no such thing as I,' he says. You can't accomplish anything unless someone else helps you.
