Beebe Medical Center Board of Directors Honors Lewes Neurosurgeon
10/24/08
The Board of Directors of Beebe Medical Center has honored Lewes neurosurgeon Balepur Venkataramana, MD, for his successful effort to save the life of a young boy fighting for his life.
Dr. Venkataramana's recognition stems from an accident that took place in July 2008 when a two-year-old child, visiting the area from Pennsylvania with his family, fell from a bunk bed and hit his head on the bottom rail. Over time, the child grew lethargic and eventually became unresponsive, whereupon his parents brought him to the Beebe Medical Center Emergency Department. A CT scan of the child's brain showed that he had an acute epidural hemorrhage. Dr. Venkataramana was notified, and although he was not on-call, he rushed to the hospital and had the child taken to the operating room where he then performed an emergency surgery to remove a blood clot that had formed. The child was then transported to Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington for continued care.
We've learned from his mother that he is doing well and has resumed normal activities, Beebe Medical Center Board Chair Janet McCarty told Board members. We know that Dr. Venkataramana's quick action and selfless response made the difference in the life of this small child. We are honored to have him as a member of our Medical Staff.
Mrs. McCarty presented Dr. Venkataramana with a plaque formally recognizing him for his commitment to patient care. Dr. Venkataramna is Board Certified in Neurological Surgery and specializes in the spine. He has offices in Lewes and Dover.
