Camp for Children with Asthma Taking Participants

04/24/08

Beebe Medical Center announces that space is still available at the American Lung Association's Spacer Camp to take place July 7 to July 11 at the University of Delaware's Virden Center in Lewes.

This unique, weeklong day camp is specifically designed to accommodate children between the ages of 7 and 11 that suffer from asthma. Beebe Medical Center is a sponsor.

"We want all children with asthma to have the opportunity to attend camp and be educated about the asthma disease process," says Trina Clark, MS RCP, Director, Respiratory and Sleep Services at Beebe Medical Center. "This program is designed to teach the children how to deal with their asthma in a fun-filled, safe environment way."

The Respiratory Care Team at Beebe Medical Center also raises money throughout the year to be able to give scholarships to those campers needing help meeting the registration fee. Campers can participate in a variety of typical camp activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, hiking and educational games. They also will receive lessons on diet, exercise, and disease management under the instruction of on-site physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists through an integrated asthma education program.

In Delaware alone, there are more than 24,000 children with asthma-children that, from an early age, must be taught how to properly care for and control this debilitating disease in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Drop-off time is 7:30 a.m. each day and pick-up time is 5 p.m. For more information or to sign up a child, please contact respiratory therapists Angela Lindale, RRT, or Lynnette Klopp, RRT, at (302) 645-3161, or email Asthmacamp@bbmc.org.
