Beebe Medical Center Vascular Lab Achieves International Recognition

12/07/06

Beebe Medical Center Vascular Laboratory has attained recognition for its commitment to providing a high level of patient care and quality testing for the diagnosis of vascular disease. The facility has achieved accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. One American dies every 32 seconds of cardiovascular disease, and from disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and disability, with 500,000 new strokes each year. And, each year two million people develop deep vein thrombosis, which can break away and enter the lungs.

Early detection of these life-threatening vascular diseases and disorders is possible through the use of noninvasive vascular testing techniques performed within vascular laboratories.

The laboratory, located at Beebe Medical Center's Lewes campus, is one of a select number of vascular laboratories in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to meet or exceed the ICAVL standards for noninvasive vascular testing. Beebe Medical Center is the only medical center in Sussex County with an accredited vascular laboratory. During the accreditation process, every aspect of the laboratory's daily operations and its impact on the quality of health care provided to patients is assessed and reviewed. Participation in the accreditation process demonstrates the laboratory's attention to a high level of patient care and quality testing. ICAVL accreditation is valid for a period of three years.

The vascular laboratory is part of the Beebe Medical Center Cardiovascular Services, which in early 2007 will expand its healthcare services to include an interventional cardiology program, and, through an affiliation with Christiana Care Health System, a cardiac surgery program. Christiana Care Health System is a teaching hospital recognized for its excellence in cardiovascular programs.
