Beebe's Millville Emergency Center to Close Until Next Summer Season

08/24/06

Beebe Medical Center's Millville Emergency Center will close at 7 a.m. Tuesday, September 5, and will remain closed until the summer season of 2007.

It's been a busy summer, said Fran Needham, Director of Emergency Services at Beebe Medical Center. And although we have not reached the end of the season, so far we have given medical attention to more than 4,500 patients.

The doctors and nurses at the Millville Emergency Center, located on Route 26, just a few miles west of the beach, treat summer visitors as well as local residents in the south coastal area suffering from injuries or illnesses.

July and August of 2006 were the busiest months with 1,865 patient visits in July and 1,358 patient visits by August 20.

In 1981, Beebe Medical Center opened a summertime Emergency Room in Bethany Beach to serve the growing vacationing population. It was the only freestanding seasonal emergency facility in Delaware. The emergency facility was moved to its current location in Millville in 1983, and has seen a steady growth in the number of patients every since.
The increasing volume of patients served at the Millville Emergency Center mirrors the growth that has been seen at the Emergency Department at Beebe's main campus in Lewes. Annual totals of patient visits in the Lewes Emergency Department reveal an increase of 35 percent since 2000.

Beebe's Emergency Department at its main campus on Savannah Road in Lewes continues to be open 24 hours a day. As a reminder, all patients with potentially life threatening illnesses and injuries should call 911.
