Cape Henlopen High School Wellness Center Offers Session for Parents
03/13/06
The Cape Henlopen High School Wellness Center is organizing a Growing With Your Teen education and discussion session for parents on Wednesday, March 22, at 7 p.m. in the High School cafeteria.
Raising a teenager can be challenging, said Mark Thalheimer, a licensed social worker who is the coordinator of the Wellness Center. Our goal is to provide parents with information that may help them better understand their child and to present options that may assist them in helping their child through the teenage years.
The session will begin with an overview of current issues in the high school from Student Services Coordinator Robert Maull. Then, School Resource Officer Mark Ostroski will provide information on community social and legal issues such as drug use, under-age drinking, and violence.
The Wellness Center staff will review the physical and psychological developmental stages of teens. High School psychologist David Jefferson and Ninth Grade Transition Counselor Mike Firch will provide parents with recommendations on improving communication with their teens. Parents will be given ideas to help them better communicate with their children based on the child's developmental stages and how the child is likely to process information.
The evening will conclude with an opportunity for parents to ask the panel questions. For more information, contact the Cape Henlopen High School Wellness Center at 644-2946.
