Beebe's Hasting Heart Care Center Cardiac Rehabilitation Department Has Expanded

10/31/05

The Cardiac Rehab Department of Beebe Medical Center has expanded in size and services to meet the growing needs of our community. The department, located in the Hastings Heart Care Center on the first floor of the Medical Center's Savannah Road campus, has expanded into an adjacent gym area that housed outpatient Physical Therapy.

The larger department has more exercise equipment and a new telemetry system that allows staff nurses to monitor additional patients during their sessions. The number of patients the department can accommodate at a time has grown from 8 to 16. The number of staff nurses also is being increased, not only to work with an increased number of patients, but also to work with future hospital inpatients recovering from open-heart surgery.

The Physical Therapy Department has moved the bulk of its outpatient care services to the Beebe Health Campus on Route 24, but also will continue to serve inpatients and some selected outpatients in the hospital location.

The growth of the Cardiac Rehab Department is part of an overall expansion of Beebe Medical Center's Cardiovascular Service Line, and the beginning of a new era in patient care. In 2006, the Medical Center's heart services will grow to include interventional procedures such as angioplasties and stent placements, as well as open-heart valve repairs and coronary artery bypass grafts.

Beebe will be offering cardiac surgeries through an affiliation with Christiana Care Health System. World-renowned cardiac surgeon, Gerald M. Lemole, M.D., Christiana Care's W. Samuel Carpenter III Distinguished Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery, and his surgical team from Christiana Care, will expand their practice to Beebe, extending the Delaware's first and most experienced cardiac program to Sussex County.
