Beebe's Millville Emergency Center Closes After Busy Summer

09/07/05

Beebe Medical Center's Millville Emergency Center closed for the season 7 a.m. Tuesday morning after giving medical attention to a record 5,328 patients throughout the busy summer months.
Every summer we just keep increasing our volume, said Fran Needham, Director of Emergency Services for Beebe Medical Center. The numbers grow, both at Millville and in our Emergency Department at the main campus in Lewes.
The doctors and nurses at the Millville Emergency Center, located on Route 26, just a few miles west of the beach, treat summer visitors as well as local residents in the south coastal area suffering from injuries or illnesses. July and August of 2005 were the busiest months on record for the center, with 1,971 patient visits in July and 1,828 visits in August. These two months together represented a 10 percent growth in volume compared to July and August of 2004. Even though the September numbers for this year are still being tabulated, it is already clear that the 2005 summer volume topped the 5,245 patients who visited the center in 2004.
The increasing volume of patients served at the Millville Emergency Center mirrors the growth that has been seen at the Emergency Department at Beebe's main campus in Lewes. As of Labor Day Weekend, 11,659 patients received medical attention at the Lewes facility since June. The number of patients treated in July and August of 2005 was an 11 percent increase over the number of patients treated in July and August of 2004. Annual totals of patient visits reveals that in fiscal year of 2005, there were 34,805 patients treated, representing a 25 percent increase in the number of patients treated in 2001.
Beebe's Emergency Department at its main campus on Savannah Road in Lewes continues to be open 24 hours a day. As a reminder, all patients with potentially life threatening illnesses and injuries should call 911.
