The 3rd Annual Beebe Honors Awards Evening To Take Place

07/14/05

The Boards of Directors of the Beebe Medical Center and the Beebe Medical Foundation are proud to announce they will present three, prestigious philanthropic and service awards to individuals who have made a significant difference to Beebe and to the quality of healthcare it brings to the community.

The presentations will be made during the Third Annual Beebe Honors Awards dinner event Aug. 25, at the Clubhouse at Baywood in Long Neck.

Mrs. Eolyne K. Tunnell will be honored with the 2005 Norman B. Baylis Award for helping to ensure Beebe meets the community healthcare needs now and in the future. Mrs. Tunnell, together with her late husband Robert W. Tunnell, Sr., gave $1 million to Beebe to establish the Robert and Eolyne Tunnell Cancer Center at Beebe. Mrs. Tunnell understood the importance that a cancer center would have to our community. Mrs. Tunnell continues to support the medical center, as well as other community services. She recently pledged a leadership gift towards the expansion of the Georgetown Library.

The Dewey Beach Lion's Club will be honored with the 2005 John W. Rollins, Sr. Award for humanitarian and philanthropic activities. The Lion's Club motto is We Serve and is known for its support of quality healthcare throughout our country and the world through philanthropy. Locally, the Dewey Beach Lion's Club provided a significant leadership gift to Beebe's Vision 2005 Campaign, supporting the construction and equipping of the Outpatient Care Center at Beebe Health Campus on Route 24. This organization, true to its philosophy, continues to partner with Beebe Medical Center to provide the healthcare services for our community.

Dr. and Mrs. James Beebe will be honored with the 2005 Robert W. Tunnell, Sr. Award for members of the Beebe extended family who have contributed to the significant growth of the quality of Beebe's services to the community. Dr. and Mrs. James Beebe have truly been a devoted team for Beebe Medical Center.

Dr. Beebe, the son of one of the two Beebe brothers who founded the hospital in 1916, joined his father in 1950 as the first board-certified surgeon in Sussex County. He carried on the family tradition by providing quality healthcare to his patients until his retirement in 1993, and by providing guidance for the growth of the hospital through his service on both the Hospital and Foundation boards.

Mrs. Betty Mann-Beebe is a successful local businesswoman, an active community leader, volunteer and friend to many. Mrs. Beebe served on the original planning committee for Beebe's successful Annual Thanksgiving Ball. For many years she chaired that event, which continues to provide significant philanthropic support of many projects and programs of Beebe Medical Center.

These three awards, named after Norman B. Baylis, John W. Rollins, Sr., and Robert W. Tunnell, Sr., were created to forever honor the impact that these men had on the quality and growth of healthcare services at Beebe Medical Center, said R. Michael Clemmer, Executive Director of Beebe Medical Foundation. Today we are honoring the 2005 recipients for their support and work to make sure that Beebe continues to bring the best quality of service to our community.

Friends of the recipients and of the medical center are encouraged to take part in the evening dinner event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Aug. 25. This is a wonderful evening celebrating Beebe Medical Center's partnership with our most generous donors in service of our community.

Cape Gazette Publisher Dennis Forney will be the keynote speaker. The cost of the dinner is $60 and reservations must be made by Aug. 15. For more information, or to make a reservation, call the Foundation at (302) 644-2900.
