American Heart Association Hosts Heart Walk Team Captain Kick Off
The Sussex County Division of the American Heart Association (AHA) held its annual Heart Walk Team Captain Kick off on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at Redden State Forest in Georgetown.
Heart Walk team captains help coordinate teams made up of local businesses, organizations, families, and individuals. This year's Heart Walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 1, at Redden State Forest.
At the kickoff Jeffrey Fried, Beebe Medical Center President and CEO and Chairman of the 2005 Heart Walk, welcomed current and prospective team captains. Stroke survivor Lance Phillips spoke about the support he has received from the AHA. Mary Beth Furjanic, Corporate Events Director of the Sussex County Division of the AHA, explained that proceeds from the walk help the AHA in its goal to end cardiovascular diseases. While heart disease is America's second greatest killer, it remains the number one reason for death in Delaware. The disease claims more than 930,000 lives a year. Contributions fund lifesaving research and public and professional education programs in the community. Local businessman and heart disease survivor Richard Derrickson is this year's Walk Honorary Chairman.
