Beebe to Hold Free Stroke Risk Assessment
05/06/05
Beebe Medical Center, in conjunction with the American Heart Association, will host a free Stroke Risk Assessment from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 12, at Wal*Mart in Rehoboth Beach.
The morning event is open to the public and no appointments are necessary. The assessments will be carried out by Virginia Rickards, RN, Med., CCRN, an instructor at the Beebe School of Nursing, and two student nurses, and will only take a few minutes. The assessments will include a short questionnaire on medical history, blood pressure and heart rate readings, and educational materials pertaining to the warning signs of stroke and ways to reduce some risks.
According to the American Heart Association, Stroke is the No. 3 killer and the No. 1 disabler of Americans. Someone suffers a stroke every 60 seconds. Someone dies from a stroke every 3 minutes. A stroke needs to be treated with the same sense of urgency as a heart attack. Because of this, the new terminology for stroke is Brain Attack . Early intervention can minimize brain injury, and preventive care, which includes identifying one's risk, may reduce the risk of stroke.
