Beebe Medical Center Physicians Attend Trauma Conference

02/22/05

Four physicians from Beebe Medical Center traveled to Lake Tahoe, Nevada this month to attend a course on the management of trauma victims. The course, entitled Trauma: The Team Approach to the Clinical Challenge, was designed to provide the physicians with the latest advances in care for trauma patients.

Representing Beebe Medical Center at the conference were general surgeons Dr. Erik Stancofski and Dr. Clara Higgins; anesthesiologist Dr. Carl Stein; and orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Mark Boytim. Some of the topics covered included: shock, chemical and biologic agent casualties; head and cervical spine injuries; and pediatric and geriatric trauma.

Maintaining Beebe Medical Center's accreditation as a trauma center is a priority for our hospital and our community, said Dr. James Marvel, director of the trauma service at Beebe Medical Center. Furthering our understanding of traumatic injuries through courses like this one gives us an advantage - before the patients arrive at the emergency room and when every second counts.

Dr. Carl Stein, anesthesiologist at Beebe Medical Center said he was pleased to find that Beebe was indeed very up to date with all of the latest technology available in the field. Dr. Erik Stancofski and Dr. Clara Higgins agreed that Beebe's surgical team provides progressive medicine with the latest techniques.

Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Mark Boytim also found the course very educational. Usually I attend courses on sports medicine or total joint replacement, so this was a good opportunity to learn about different subjects. For example, I have not had any formal training on biological or chemical weapons since medical school, but given the threats of terrorism present today, I believe it is important to learn about things like mustard gases, anthrax and blast injuries. While it is good to learn about such things, I hope and pray never to need to use this knowledge.

As a Level III trauma center, Beebe Medical Center's emergency room is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Beebe also maintains a satellite emergency room in Ocean View during the summer season.
