Beebe Medical Center Employees Go Above and Beyond

10/05/04

Beebe Medical Center is pleased to announce and congratulate its October “You Make A Difference” award recipients: Michael Danz, Director of Surgical Services at Beebe Medical Center; and Jennifer Pepper, RN, and Alicia Wharton, RN, of Beebe Home Health.

Michael Danz, Director of Surgical Services, received two nominations for making a difference, especially in one outstanding demonstration of customer service. The Surgical Services Staff nominated their director with the following explanation:

“Our director is the greatest. He leads by example and is a true patient care advocate. One specific example just happened recently. A patient had called to report she had lost her ring when she had been here for surgery. When Michael was told about it, he immediately went into action. He found out when the trash had been picked up and went to the landfill only to spend five hours going through trash and debris looking for the ring. We didn’t have much hope he would be successful at finding the ring, which was a nursing school ring, which was highly valuable to the patient. Through his dedication and perseverance, he found it! He does these kinds of things for people all the time but this particular event just about says it all as to what Michael will do for our patients and our staff.”

The Beebe Home Health staff nominated their coworkers for their quick action in a crisis. As the nomination explains: “While busy at work in the office (in Georgetown), they witnessed an accident occurring. They ran from the office and darted across traffic to assist the victims. Without concern for their own safety, they jolted across Route 113 in heavy traffic to evaluate the passengers of two cars that were smashed, one which rolled four times. While the office staff called 911 for assistance, Jennifer Pepper and Alicia Wharton attended to the victims with compassion and expertise until the paramedics arrived. Recognizing that the injuries were serious, they stayed with the wounded and consoled them.”

Beebe Medical Center’s “You Make A Difference” employee recognition program, which was established in 2002, gives employees the opportunity to recognize their colleagues for outstanding service. The program is similar to an employee of the month program, but 18 employees can be selected annually. Each nomination, which may be submitted by fellow employees or management, must meet criteria developed by the committee. The “You Make A Difference” Review Board evaluates eligible nominations each month. Winners are announced in a surprise ceremony in which the committee meets in their department and presents the award. Employees selected for the award receive:

? Parking space with sign/plaque for a month
? $100 gift certificate to business of choice within Sussex County
? Letter of congratulations and personal visit from Jeffrey Fried, Beebe president
? Photo for wall plaque on hall outside of cafeteria
? Special pin for badge
