All of us are likely to have problems with our feet, but persons with diabetes may develop serious problems more quickly and have more complications, especially when circulation or nerves are impaired. When circulation is decreased, the tissue in the foot is less able to fight infection. When nerve sensation is impaired, an injury can occur without pain and go unnoticed. The key for the person with diabetes is to view all foot problems as potentially dangerous and to practice ways to prevent them or seek care as soon as they happen.
The Wound Care Services/Diabetes Management Department is an outpatient department of Beebe Medical Center that provides care for those persons with Diabetes Mellitus, diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, chronic non-healing wounds, pressure ulcers, vascular wounds, post-surgical wounds, traumatic wounds and minor foot and nail problems. Additional services available include: ostomy education and management, skin care, nutritional management and education, diabetes education, including both individual or group sessions for Type I, Type II or gestational diabetes.
