08/05/03
Governor Minner recently presented Beebe Medical Center's Isabel Benson, RN BS OCN, with the 2003 Delaware Excellence in Nursing Practice Award for Acute Care. Ms. Benson, an Oncology Clinical and Research Coordinator at Beebe’s Tunnell Cancer Center, is the first recipient of this award in Delaware, which was presented in Dover on Thursday, July 17, 2003. Three other awards were presented for Advance Practice, Community Based, and Long Term Care Nursing Practice.
Beebe Medical Center’s Patient Care Division nominated Ms. Benson for the award based upon her mastery of patient assessment, commitment to patient care, collaboration with patients and family members to establish treatment and determine quality of life goals, and her overall understanding of the oncologic disease processes. She serves as a lead nurse in the cancer center and represents nursing in Beebe’s interdisciplinary cancer care conferences where plans of care for newly diagnosed cancer patients are presented and discussed.
Ms. Benson earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Prince George’s Community College in 1981 and her Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration from Columbia Union College in Maryland in 1993. She joined Beebe’s team in 1997 and is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society and Delaware Nurses Association. Additionally, Ms. Benson serves as a speaker for the Breast Cancer Support Network.
