Tunnell Cancer Center Offers Free Skin Cancer Screenings May 28 and 29
05/02/03
As the summer season begins, Beebe Medical Center’s Tunnell Cancer Center reminds the community about the importance of preventing the most common cancer, which affects the largest organ of the body - the skin. Beebe will offer free skin cancer screenings on Wednesday, May 28, and Thursday, May 29, from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Tunnell Cancer Center. Advance registration is required; please call 645-3171.
Skin cancer accounts for more than 40% of all cancers, according to the American Cancer Society, which recommends a cancer-related checkup, including skin examination, every three years for people between 20 and 40 years of age, and every year for people 40 and older.
In addition to regular screenings, Beebe encourages people to avoid too much exposure to the sun and other sources of UV light, especially during the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., use sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher liberally and frequently, wear protective clothing and hats when in the sun and on hazy days, protect children against sunburn, and check for skin changes or suspicious moles monthly.
