May is Osteoporosis Awareness Prevention Month
04/28/03
Nearly 44 million Americans are at risk of developing osteoporosis, often called “the silent disease” because it occurs without symptoms. Osteoporosis is a serious health concern that affects bone mass and increases the chance for fractures. To raise awareness and prevention for women and men throughout Sussex County, internist Dr. Uday Jani, on staff at Beebe Medical Center, will host three free “Focus on Health” seminars and osteoporosis screenings throughout May.
The 2003 theme of Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month, sponsored by the National Osteoporosis Foundation, is "Are You Losing Height?" Height loss of an inch or more may be due to vertebral fractures caused by osteoporosis that women and men may be unaware they have even sustained.
Beebe's free Focus on Health series will feature quantitative ultrasound screenings with Dr. Jani, who is also a certified clinical densitometrist, who will measure bone density for signs of osteoporosis and provide informational discussions about prevention and risks for developing osteoporosis.
