04/28/11
" Eight students at the Beebe School of Nursing are the recipients of scholarships presented by the Irene P. Sorbara Charitable Foundation Trust.
Mrs. Sorbara established the trust to provide annual scholarships for residents of Sussex County who are pursuing post-secondary education in the fields of nursing or teaching. The first scholarship was awarded to the Beebe School of Nursing in the fall of 2010 for the upcoming 2011 spring term.
Mrs. Sorbara was born in Lewes in 1938 and died in 2007. She was an elementary school teacher in Rehoboth Beach for 30 years.
A Board of Governors decides which institutions will receive the annual award, and the institutions choose the recipients based on criteria Mrs. Sorbara established. Members of the first Board of Governors, established in 2010, all live in Lewes. They are: Dr. Midge Smith, Ms. Connie Costigan, and Ms. Amy Orr Lear, RN.
This year's recipients are: Seniors: Julia Bayne of Milton; Jessica Naipier-Kane of Milton; and Amanda Richter of Lewes. First year students are: Kimberly Brasure of Dagsboro; Amber Gallery of Lewes; Patresa Karschner of Lewes; Caitlin Owens of Lewes, and Elizabeth Theil of Delmar.
