Delaware Attorney General to Speak at Community Forum on Bullying Sponsored by Beebe Medical Center and Cape Henlopen High School
03/01/11
"On March 21, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden will be the guest speaker at a free community forum on bullying to take place at Cape Henlopen High School.
Attorney General Biden, who has actively worked to protect children, will speak on Bullying and Crimes against Children. The forum, to take place in the school theater at 7 p.m., is the second in a series of three on bullying being sponsored by Cape Henlopen High School's Positive Support Program and Beebe Medical Center's Forensic Nurse Program to educate parents about the bullying that occurs in our society today, how to recognize it, and how to fight it.
Attorney General Biden created the Delaware Department of Justice Child Predator Unit to track and prosecute child sex offenders, and he helped pass state legislation strengthening Delaware's sex offender registry statute. He implemented the Department of Justice Family Division in 2007 to improve efforts to fight domestic violence and juvenile crime.
Also speaking will be Deputy Attorney General Patricia Dailey Lewis, Delaware's champion for children's rights and safety. Attorney General Biden appointed her the first Director of the Family Division at its inception; she continues to serve as its director. Previously, she was the statewide leader of the Department of Justice Families at Risk Unit. She has worked for the protection of families and children since 1985. Among her many roles, she serves as a commissioner on the Child Protection Accountability Commission.
Cheri Will, RN, S.A.N.E./Domestic Violence Coordinator for the Forensic Nurse Program at Beebe Medical Center, said the event is taking place at the high school because schools play a critical role in shaping our community's future, and that Cape Henlopen High School is the heart of our local community.
I am glad that Beebe Medical Center and Cape Henlopen School District are working together to tackle this and other serious issues that our young people face today, Cheri says. It takes a village to protect a child as well as raise a child. She added that, as community members, it is our responsibility to help all of our children.
Delaware as a state has called for more education on childhood issues such as bullying and child abuse. Beebe Medical Center and Cape Henlopen High School are ready to answer that call.
School counselor Terry Sutton says that as part of our Community Connections to Cape, It is our goal to invite our community into our school to discuss and learn about issues our children face every day. These issues are bigger than school, and we need to unite as an extended community to help and support our students.
There will be educational materials available at the forum and those attending will have an opportunity to ask questions. The third forum is scheduled for April 12 at the same time and place. This will be a community resource night where many support organizations will be attending, including Child Advocacy Center, ContactLifeline, Prevent Child Abuse Delaware, and local Law Enforcement. People will be able to walk around and collect information. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Terry Sutton at (302) 645-7898 or Cheri Will at (302) 645-3311.
