Denise Hill is Recognized with the "You Make a Difference" Award for February

02/17/11

Denise Hill, a certified nursing assistant at Beebe Medical Center, has been honored with the You Make a Difference Award for February.

Denise is assigned to the medical-surgical unit on the third floor of the hospital and is known by the clinical staff for her positive attitude, infectious smile and attentiveness to the needs of the patients. She also is known for her generosity and for how tirelessly she works each year to raise money for Relay for Life, the annual fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.

This past holiday season she focused much of her personal time on helping homeless children in our community. After learning that there were families that together had more than 100 children who had lost their homes in the Cape Henlopen School District alone, she set out to help. She led a Beebe-wide effort to purchase items to help these families that included sweaters and jackets, mittens and scarves, blankets, sleeping bags, school supplies, food and other necessities. She encouraged individual Beebe team members to help individual students in an adopt-a-child' effort that included giving the student a backpack filled with presents.

Denise's infectious energy and effort snowballed throughout Beebe Medical Center and into the community. Beebe employees, families and friends purchased enough items to fill up a U-Haul truck donated by the Nutter Company that included 117 backpacks stuffed with holiday gifts. Hill spoke with business owners and organization representatives who joined in to help when they learned of the situation. The donations were delivered to the school district, which then delivered the donations to the families. Richard Faull and the Lewes/Rehoboth Association of Churches helped district officials and district Homeless Liaison Randy Redard in the distribution effort.

Denise is an outstanding role model and leader at Beebe and in our community. Beebe Medical Center is proud and fortunate to have her on our team. For Hill's part, she wishes to thank and acknowledge those who supported the effort, and says that she will continue to help the families. Beebe Medical Center's You Make a Difference employee recognition program, which was established in 2002, gives employees the opportunity to recognize their colleagues for outstanding service. The program is similar to an employee of the month program, but 18 employees can be selected annually. Each nomination, which may be submitted by fellow employees or management, must meet criteria developed by the committee. The You Make a Difference Review Board evaluates eligible nominations each month. Winners are announced in a surprise ceremony in which the committee meets in their department and presents the award. Employees selected for the award receive:

§ Parking space with sign/plaque for a month
§ $100 gift certificate to business of choice within Sussex County
§ Letter of congratulations and personal visit from Jeffrey Fried, Beebe president
§ Photo for wall plaque on hall outside of cafeteria
§ Special pin for badge
§ Letter to team member's director and department recognition
