Physicians and Employees of Beebe Medical Center Help Flood Victims in Pakistan

01/18/11

Thousands of victims of the devastating floods in Pakistan have fresh water, medical supplies and new skills, thanks to Beebe Medical Center physicians and employees.

A few months ago Aasim Sehbai, MD, a medical oncologist/hematologist at Tunnell Cancer Center and a native of Pakistan, led a fundraising drive at Beebe Medical Center to help the victims. More than $14,000 was raised. Dr. Sehbai contacted his friend Syed Farrukh, the General Secretary of PEACE Relief International, an organization that has set up relief and rehabilitation projects in the country.

PEACE Relief International reports that the funds have paid for several projects. For example, a one-day free medical camp was held where more than 1,000 men, women and children were treated for such illnesses as diarrhea, malaria, typhoid, and respiratory infections. A one-day eye clinic was held this month where patients were treated for eye diseases and cataracts. The money helped fund a Skills Development and Training Center for Women at Village Kamp Koroona, Nowshara, where women and young girls are learning to sew and to begin their own tailoring businesses from home, which allows them to generate income and future opportunities.

PEACE Relief International also has credited Beebe Medical Center physicians for helping to provide safe water through the installation of new pumps, and for providing wheel barrels and supplies that are being used in reconstruction.

Our physicians and team members at Beebe Medical Center have made a difference in the lives of people in Pakistan, says Dr. Sehbai. But we cannot forget these people. They still need our help.

Dr. Sehbai will continue to organize fundraising efforts throughout 2011. For more information on how to help flood victims in Pakistan, visit the website:
