Beebe Medical Center's Free Flu Vaccine Clinics Receiving Strong Response

10/22/10

More than 200 people received their free flu vaccine at the Beebe Lab Express in Millville on the first day that Beebe Medical Center offered them this season. A few days later, more than 100 people got theirs on a Thursday evening at the Nanticoke Museum, despite the driving rain outside.

I am so happy to see people taking steps to stay healthy this flu season, says Peggy Bixler, RN, MSN, Community Health Nurse Coordinator for Beebe Medical Center.

As part of its mission to encourage healthy living and prevent illness, Beebe Medical Center has been offering free, one-day flu vaccine clinics in October. It will continue to offer them in November at convenient locations around the Medical Center's service area. The vaccines are for adults 18 years of age and older. Parents should contact their children's physician for information about pediatric vaccinations.

Influenza viruses are always changing so annual vaccination is recommended. Each year scientists try to match the viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu that year. The 2010-2011 vaccine provides protection against A/HINI (pandemic) influenza and two other influenza viruses -- influenza A/H3N2 and influenza B. It will not prevent illnesses caused by other viruses.

The clinics are organized through the Beebe Medical Center Community Health Department. No appointments are necessary. For more information, contact the Community Health Department at (302) 645-3337, or visit the Beebe Medical Center website: www.beebemed.org
