Nurses at Tunnell Cancer Center Establish New Oncology Nursing Society Chapter for Any Interested Oncology Nurses in Southern Delaware

06/24/10

"It took more than two years but Kathy Dillon, RN, OCN, an oncology nurse at Beebe Medical Center's Tunnell Cancer Center, was determined to establish a chapter of the national Oncology Nursing Society in southern Delaware.

We've always had to go to the Diamond State Chapter at Christiana Care Health System in New Castle County when we wanted to attend a chapter meeting, Mrs. Dillon explains. There has never been a chapter here.

That has all changed now that the new Southern Delaware Chapter has been established at Tunnell Cancer Center, located at the Beebe Health Campus on John J. Williams Highway in Rehoboth Beach. The Chapter is open to all oncology nurses in Sussex and Kent counties. So far there are 24 members.

Mrs. Dillon said that having a chapter in Sussex County means that oncology nurses in the area have a better opportunity to take part in the Society's educational support and other programs. The Society, which has more than 37,000 members, promotes excellence in patient care, education, research, and administration in oncology nursing. It has 231 chapters and 27 special interest groups. It provides information and education to nurses around the world. In addition, the Society plays an active role in advocacy activities at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Mrs. Dillon was elected President. The other officers are as follows: Mary Van Bergen, RN, Vice President; Nancy Burd, RN, OCN, Secretary/Treasurer; Lucy Ositko, RN, OCN, Program Chair; Kim Willoughby, RN, OCN, Nominating Chair; and Diana O'Hagen, RN, OCN, Membership Chair.

Nurses that would like to join the chapter should email Mrs. Dillon at: kathydrn82@comcast.net.
