American Association of Diabetes Educators Accredits Beebe Medical Center Self Management Education Program

06/21/10

"Beebe Medical Center's "Diabetes Self Management Education" program was recently named an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).
The Beebe Medical Center program has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) since August 2000.
The AADE accreditation allows Beebe Medical Center to provide education in as many as 10 different sites without additional applications and fees. This will permit residents in and around Delaware and Maryland increased access to critical diabetes education services. The education program is under the auspices of the Diabetes Management Department located at the Beebe Medical Center Long Neck Health Center at 32060 Long Neck Road, Long Neck.
Trends show that diabetes education is moving out of the hospital and into the community, so AADE's accreditation program was created, in part, to encourage diabetes education where the patient is seeking care, said Leslie E. Kolb, RN, BSN, MBA, Program Director, Diabetes Education Accreditation Program. Beebe Medical Center's: Diabetes Self Management Education is exactly the type of program we envisioned when we set up our accreditation program in 2009.
Diabetes education is a collaborative process through which people with diabetes, or who are at risk, gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions. Diabetes educators and registered dietitians lead the classes and provide the information.
For more information about class schedules and the referral process, please contact Beebe Medical Center Diabetes Management Department at (302) 947-2500.

The Diabetes Management Department offers educational and management services for people with diabetes. Diabetes educational programs are offered three times each month for persons newly diagnosed and those who need a refresher course for managing their disease. A diabetes self-management education series is presented at various days and times on a rotating basis. Individual sessions are available for specific needs. All provide the ADA standard curriculum for healthy eating, increasing activity, monitoring blood glucose, taking medications, healthy coping, problem solving, and preventing complications. Programs also are offered in the Spanish language.

Beebe Medical Center is a not-for-profit community medical center with a charitable mission to encourage healthy living, prevent illness, and restore optimal health with the people residing, working, or visiting in the communities we serve.
