Beebe Medical Center Supplies Local Beach Lifeguards with First Aid Kits

05/24/10

Beachgoers who suffer a cut or a scratch can obtain a free first aid kit from Delaware lifeguards, thanks to a Beebe Medical Center annual summer program.

Delaware lifeguard stands from Lewes to Fenwick have received a total of 4,000 Beebe Medical Center travel-size kits. They contain six band aids, two disposable antiseptic towelettes, one sterile adhesive pad and some basic first aid information.

Beebe Medical Center encourages people to follow safe practices while visiting the beach, and to always call 911 in a life-threatening emergency. Water safety practices include:
" Always swim or surf at a beach that is patrolled by lifeguards
" Always swim under supervision or with a friend. Never swim alone
" Don't swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs
" Don't run and dive into the water. The water may be more shallow than you expect and you could be seriously injured
" Float with a rip current or undertow. Do not swim against it. Signal for help if needed
" Check conditions before you enter the water. Understand the flag warnings posted.
" Learn CPR for adults and children
